Couple Injured in Crash with Dump Truck Receive $1.13 Million Settlement
Attorneys Hunt Willis and Forest Horne obtained a $1.13 million settlement for a husband and wife who were seriously injured when a dump truck loaded with gravel slammed into the back of the couple’s SUV. The collision occurred at a traffic light on an off ramp of Interstate 40 near Burlington. The dump truck came speeding down the ramp rear-ending the couple’s vehicle.
The truck driver said the brakes had failed. However, the truck driver’s employer indicated that he drove the truck from the crash site and the brakes worked. Initially, N.C. State Highway Patrol investigators issued a citation for faulty brakes but that was later rescinded after the employer had the truck tested and no mechanical failures were found.
The wife suffered a neck injury that required surgery. Her husband had several back fractures and a head injury that required neurological care. He also re-injured his cervical spine, which had been operated on just a month earlier.
