Proposed Settlement for Asbestos-Contaminated CSI Toys
A settlement has been proposed in the nationwide class action against CBS Broadcasting, Inc. and several major toy retailers. The settlement, if approved by the court, will grant refunds to consumers who purchased the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Fingerprint Examination Kit or the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Forensic Lab Kit. Tests showed that the fingerprint powder in the toy kits contained tremolite, one of the deadliest of the asbestos fiber types.
The tests revealing asbestos in the CSI toys were originally conducted by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) in 2007. Subsequently, the presence of tremolite asbestos in the toy kits was confirmed by three independent, government-certified laboratories.
Anyone who has one of the CSI kits should immediately get the product away from their home and children. Exposure to asbestos in the kits can place children at risk of developing asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma, many years after the exposure. A website calied http://www.csitoyssettlement.com has been set up for submitting requests for claims.
Planet Toys is the manufacturer of the CSI toy kits. Planet Toys is not participating in the settlement because the company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in March 2009.
